Google Apps for Education

Exciting technology changes are ahead for the University of Michigan! Your U-M Online (UMOL) services will change when U-M begins using Google Apps for Education. After an extensive evaluation process, U-M signed a contract with Google this past fall to provide a suite of tools to improve collaboration that includes Google email and calendar. As a current UMOL subscriber, you can receive these services at no charge... and keep your current uniqname@umich.edu email address. You will also continue to have access to the MCommunity Directory and the ITS Service Center.

December 23, 2011
- UMOL stops accepting new subscribers.
February 2012
- You begin receiving information via email, including links to support and training resources, to help you prepare to move your email messages and contacts to Google email.
March 2012
- You receive your final billing from UMOL. After that we will no longer charge you for services, including access to email provided as part of Google Apps.
- You receive access to a web tool that allows you to move your email into Google.
- You receive access to the Google calendar and collaboration tools, including Docs, Sites, Blogger, and Talk.
August 2012
- You have until August to complete the Google migration process. Soon after that, the old mail servers will be taken offline and retired, and you will lose access to email data.
- You will also need to transfer any content currently stored in your IFS space to Google Docs, Sites and/or another file storage system.

Be sure to visit the project support site at google.umich.edu for helpful information and to learn more about U-M's move to Google. In addition, the ITS Service Center (734-764-HELP, 4HELP@umich.edu) will be available to assist you throughout the migration period. Please email us if you choose not to migrate and wish to close your UMOL account.
